Type ratings TR (H)

Every licensed pilot must hold a valid type rating for each helicopter type they intend to fly.

The TR(H) course is the official training path that certifies your competence on a specific helicopter type, and is an essential requirement for both private and commercial operations.

Air-Evolution Ltd. offers type rating courses on various helicopter types, with experienced instructors and operational base in Lodrino, Ticino.

The path to a Type Rating

Entry requirements

To enrol on a TR(H) course, the applicant must hold a valid pilot licence, PPL(H) or CPL(H), with a current medical certificate. No specific minimum flight hour requirement applies to all type ratings, however the candidate must already have a sound familiarity with helicopter flight. For courses on turbine helicopters, a solid prior experience is strongly recommended.

Medical certificate

The medical certificate required depends on the licence held: Class 2 for PPL(H) holders, Class 1 for CPL(H) holders. In both cases it must be issued by an authorised Aeromedical Examiner (AME) and must be current at the time of course commencement.

Theoretical training

The theoretical programme is specific to each helicopter type and covers aircraft systems, performance, operating limitations, and normal and emergency procedures for the type concerned. Theoretical training is a prerequisite for the practical training phase and ensures the candidate has a thorough knowledge of the helicopter before taking to the controls.

Practical training

Flight training is conducted in dual instruction with a qualified instructor rated on the type. The number of hours required varies according to the helicopter type and the candidate's prior experience on the type or on similar aircraft. The programme covers type-specific manoeuvres, operational procedures, and emergency management.

Validity and revalidation

The type rating is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. To keep the rating current, revalidation must be completed before expiry, by demonstrating adequate recency on the type or by passing a proficiency check with an authorised examiner. Air-Evolution Ltd. also assists pilots with revalidation procedures with FOCA.

Skill test

Upon completion of training, the candidate must pass a skill test before an authorised Flight Examiner. Once passed, the type rating is entered on the licence and is recognised in all countries of the European Union in accordance with EASA regulations.
