Night rating NIT (H)

The NIT(H) rating qualifies the pilot to operate in low-light conditions, significantly expanding the operational possibilities for both private and commercial pilots.

It is a mandatory step on the path towards a professional licence and opens up an entirely new flying perspective: illuminated skylines and night horizons. Air-Evolution Ltd. offers this course in Ticino with qualified instructors and a flexible programme, to be completed within 6 months.

The path to the NIT(H) rating

Entry requirements

To enrol on the full NIT(H) course, the applicant must hold a valid PPL(H) licence and have logged at least 100 flight hours after licence issue, of which at least 60 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC) and 20 hours of cross-country navigation. Candidates following the integrated CPL(H) training path are not required to meet these experience prerequisites.

Medical certificate

For this rating, a valid EASA-FCL Medical Certificate is required: Class 2 for PPL(H) holders and Class 1 for CPL(H) holders. The certificate must be issued by an authorised Aeromedical Examiner (AME).

Theoretical training

The theoretical programme is dedicated to the specific characteristics of flight in low-light conditions: night vision physiology, use of flight instruments in the absence of external visual references, night meteorology, navigation procedures, and emergency management during night flight. Theoretical training is a prerequisite for the practical training phase.

Practical training

The practical training requires a minimum of 5 flight hours under night conditions, conducted in dual instruction with a qualified flight instructor. During the sessions the candidate learns night piloting technique, instrument management, landing procedures, and circuit flying in low-visibility conditions. The course typically takes place during the autumn and winter period, when nights are longer and conditions are ideal for training.

Simulated instrument flight

Private pilots following the full NIT(H) course must additionally complete 10 hours of simulated instrument flight on the helicopter, of which up to 5 hours may be conducted on a certified flight simulator. This component ensures that the pilot is able to manage the helicopter relying exclusively on flight instruments, a fundamental competency for safe night operations.

NIT(H) rating entry in the licence

Upon completion of the course, the instructor will submit all documentation to the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), which will issue the updated licence with the NIT(H) rating entry. The candidate will be authorised to operate under VFR night conditions across the entire European territory, in accordance with EASA regulations.
