Fog Departure HDF (H)

The HDF(H) rating qualifies the commercial pilot to conduct take-offs in fog and low stratus conditions, one of the most demanding operational situations in helicopter flight.

This is an advanced course, reserved for professional pilots, that develops the ability to fly the helicopter relying exclusively on flight instruments. Air-Evolution Ltd. offers this training path in Ticino with high-profile instructors and the use of certified flight simulators.

The path to the HDF(H) rating

Entry requirements

The HDF(H) course is reserved for pilots holding a CPL(H) licence with a valid Type Rating on a turbine helicopter. It is an advanced rating, designed for professional pilots already active in commercial operations who wish to expand their operational qualifications in adverse weather conditions.

Medical certificate

To access the course, a valid EASA-FCL Class 1 Medical Certificate is mandatory, issued by an authorised Aeromedical Examiner (AME).

Theoretical training

The theoretical programme covers instrument departure procedures, applied meteorology for fog conditions, airspace management in reduced visibility, and the operational regulations governing HDF departures. A solid theoretical foundation is essential before undertaking the simulator and flight sessions.

8h simulator

The core of the training takes place on a certified flight simulator, with 8 hours dedicated exclusively to instrument flight training. This phase allows the candidate to acquire and consolidate piloting technique in the absence of external visual references, in a controlled and safe environment, before transferring these skills to real flight.

8h simulated instrument flight

The training path additionally includes at least 8 hours of simulated instrument flight on the helicopter, during which the candidate is trained to manage all phases of the take-off and initial climb relying solely on flight instruments. This component completes and consolidates what was learned in the simulator, preparing the pilot to operate safely in real fog conditions.

Skill test

Upon completion of the course, the candidate undergoes a proficiency check with an authorised examiner. Once obtained, the HDF(H) rating is entered on the licence and authorises take-offs in fog conditions within commercial operations, in accordance with EASA regulations and FOCA requirements.
