Instrument Rating IR (H)
The IR(H) rating qualifies the pilot to operate in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), navigating without external visual references and relying exclusively on flight instruments.
It is one of the most advanced and prestigious qualifications in a professional pilot's career, required for operations in demanding environments such as helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), IFR passenger transport, and operations in controlled airspace.

Air-Evolution Ltd. offers EASA-approved IR(H) courses with highly qualified instructors and operational base in Lodrino, Ticino.
The path to the IR(H) rating
Entry requirements
To enrol on the IR(H) course, the applicant must hold a valid CPL(H) licence with a valid EASA-FCL Class 1 Medical Certificate. The candidate must also have a good command of the English language, required for radio communications in the IFR environment and for studying the course material. A solid flight experience background is strongly recommended before undertaking this advanced training path.
Medical certificate
For the IR(H) course, a valid EASA-FCL Class 1 Medical Certificate is mandatory, issued by an authorised Aeromedical Examiner (AME). Class 1 is an essential requirement for the exercise of instrument rating privileges in a professional context.
EASA theoretical examinations
The theoretical programme covers all subjects specific to instrument flight: IFR procedures, instrument navigation, applied meteorology for flight in IMC, use of modern navigation systems, ATC communications in the IFR environment, and emergency management during instrument flight. Theoretical preparation requires a significant commitment and is a prerequisite for access to the practical phase.
Simulator training
A substantial part of the training takes place on a certified flight simulator. Simulator sessions allow the candidate to acquire the core competencies of instrument flight in a safe and controlled environment, covering standard procedures, instrument approaches, and emergency scenarios without the operational constraints of real flight. This phase is fundamental for consolidating methodology before transitioning to the helicopter.
Flight training on twin-engine helicopter
EASA regulations require that IR(H) training and the final skill test be conducted on a helicopter certified for instrument flight, that is, an IFR-approved twin-engine type. Flight training includes real instrument approaches, management of IFR procedures in controlled airspace, and flights in meteorological conditions requiring the exclusive use of flight instruments.
Skill test
Upon completion of the course, the candidate must pass a skill test before an authorised Flight Examiner. Once obtained, the IR(H) rating is entered on the licence and is valid in all countries of the European Union in accordance with EASA regulations. Revalidation of the rating requires passing a periodic proficiency check with an authorised examiner.
